Prehistoric Settlement of Akrotiri, Thera

Excavation findings have revealed that the area of Akrotiri was first inhabited during the Late Neolithic period (around 4500 BCE) and had developed into a city by the 18th century BCE. In the early 17th century BCE, the city suffered extensive damage due to a series of earthquakes. However, many buildings were later repaired while others were left as they were, and new structures were built near the older ones, leading to an expansion of the city toward the north. Akrotiri flourished during the Late Cycladic period until it was buried by the so-called Minoan eruption.
